About

The Durham Rent Relief Program provides up to 18 months of rental and utility assistance to City of Durham residents who have experienced financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until funding runs out. Both renters and landlords can apply to the program.

Eligibility

To receive funds through this program, a landlord must:

  • Prove that they are the owner of the rental property or, if they are the manager of the property, that they have authority from the owner to rent the property. 
  • Submit a valid IRS Form W-9
  • Confirm that any past-due or future rent requests are for City of Durham properties only
  • Agree not to evict the tenant for non-payment of rent for 60 days after the last month of rent paid by this program.

Documentation

The documents and information you will need to submit with your application include:

  • Address of the property for which you are requesting funds
  • Email addresses, physical addresses, and phone numbers of your tenants whom you want to invite to participate in the program
  • IRS Form W-9
  • Bank account information if you wish to receive funds by electronic fund transfer (EFT)
  • Name and address of the property owner (if the landlord does not own the property)
  • If you received an invitation email, you will need the 5-digit case number from that email.
